What’s the comfort payment?

A comfort payment is charged by IRCTC as a type of the service payment from customers who use its web ticket reserving platform to e-book practice or air journey tickets. 

IRCTC used to cost a comfort payment of 20 plus tax per ticket for non-air-conditioned (AC) journey courses, and 40 plus tax per ticket for air-conditioned class tickets until 22 November 2016.

It was restarted on 1 September 2019 with a cost of 15 plus items and companies tax (GST) per ticket on reserving of non-AC tickets and 30 plus GST for AC class tickets.

Passengers making on-line funds by way of Bharat Interface for Cash (BHIM) or Unified Funds Interface (UPI) needed to solely pay 10 plus GST per ticket for non-AC class tickets and 20 plus GST for AC courses.

In 2019-20, IRCTC earned 352 crore from comfort payment whereas in 2020-21, it earned 299 crore.
